US Social Media Influencer Fined Following Large-Scale Electric Bike Ride on Sydney Harbour Bridge
New South Wales police have levied a penalty against an American social media personality and served two traffic infringement notices for reported reckless operation after a swarm of electric bicycle users gathered on the famous Sydney landmark during peak-hour traffic on a weekday.
The Incident: An Illegal Gathering
A group of approximately 40 people operating e-bikes and motorcycles proceeded along the primary roadway of the bridge, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The assembly then turned around and rode through the downtown area and Haymarket.
"This had potential for serious injury or fatalities," stated a senior police official David Driver on the following day.
Law enforcement said they did not chase right away the group due to safety concerns but instead located the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the Botanic Gardens, at which point they broke up.
Fines Imposed for Influencer
Later in the week, authorities announced they had served the US social media influencer known as Sur Ronster, twenty-six, with two traffic infringement notices for careless operation (not involving death or prior injury), carrying a penalty of over five hundred dollars and three demerit points each, in relation to the bridge ride-out. They added that the investigation is ongoing.
The influencer is said to have over 3.4m subscribers on YouTube and over 1.2 million on the social media app.
Creator's Response
The online figure gave comments to a major newspaper this week following the event spread rapidly on news sites and social media, saying he regretted giving "bike life" a negative image.
"I accept the blame. It was among the safest gatherings I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I’m coming here as a guest, so I’m going to come here respecting the rules and standards of the city. So when I decided to do a public meeting it did not involve a group ride, it was just to greet people near the bridge."
"I did not know the area well, I am to blame we ended up on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group completes the entirety of the bridge and comes back, an illegal act. Or we reverse, essentially, before we’re on the bridge. I chose at the time to turn around."
Broader Context on Electric Bike Rules
The spate of electric bicycles on roads nationwide has sparked growing calls for regulation. A senior government official, Mark Butler, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."
"Young people have engaged in stupid things on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the injuries that are coming into our ERs are absolutely devastating," the minister said. "We’ve got to make sure we stop these things entering the country [and] officers are given the powers to crack down, to take them away, to crush them, to dispose of them."
The state reported over two hundred injuries related to ebikes in the previous year. But, in the initial half of 2025, that figure jumped to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
