A minimum of 64 individuals were killed in a law enforcement action cracking down on the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's past.

Four security agents were among those killed during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials said.

The International human rights organization said it was "shocked" by the security action, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The area of favelas near Rio's airport is considered to be the central command of a major illegal networks.

Government representatives confirmed at least 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Resident Accounts

Residents have described the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Transport routes stay blocked in the entire neighborhood.

Organized Crime Spread

The criminal network have been expanding their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.

Security forces stated over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the raid, in addition to numerous weapons.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are thought to be members of a faction from the northern region who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
