Close to 25,000 Left Without Power in Queensland and Victoria Following Intense Storms

Nearly 25,000 households in Queensland's southeast woke up experiencing outages on Monday's dawn after severe thunderstorms impacted the region, bringing powerful gusts hitting 109km/h.

Large Ice Stones and Extensive Destruction

Locals observed large ice chunks reaching sizes of 7cm in particular locations. Weather authorities verified that various areas across Queensland had been impacted by substantial ice precipitation.

Response teams were focused on reestablishing energy supply throughout the damaged zones, with nearly 70 crews activated to manage the extensive power failures.

Victorian Weather Woes

At the same time, around one thousand energy customers in Victoria also faced power outages after Melbourne experienced its wettest day in over 500 days.

Rescue organizations received nearly 600 calls for help across the region, primarily for property damage but also for collapsed vegetation and inundation.

  • Wyndham - nearly 180 emergency requests

At the height on yesterday, over 28,000 electricity consumers in Victoria were experiencing outages.

Meteorological Predictions

Damp conditions were forecast to persist along significant areas of eastern Queensland this coming days as a low-pressure trough continued to draw in moisture against the shoreline.

Tuesday was expected to become the wettest day, with continued thunderstorm potential predicted across multiple regions of both states.

Health Warning

Health officials warned that there was an greater possibility of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the northern rural areas, particularly given the ongoing climate situation.

This alert comes after past events where analogous circumstances led to significant health impacts in the state.
